International Conference “CIS Sugar Market 2026: Export Challenges and Solutions”
On April 9, 2026, the 15th Annual International Conference “CIS Sugar Market 2026: Export Challenges and Solutions” was held in Moscow. The event brought together representatives of government agencies, businesses, scientific and international organizations, as well as experts from the agro-industrial sector of CIS countries and beyond.
The conference agenda addressed key issues related to the development of the sugar market in CIS countries, including integration processes, investment projects, country-specific prospects, and global market trends. Particular attention was paid to the impact of macroeconomic factors, climate change, and water availability on agricultural production.
On behalf of SIC ICWC, Matlyuba Rakhimova delivered a report on “Water Balance of the Aral Sea Basin” highlighting key aspects of water balance formation in the region. The presentation covered water distribution, the impact of climate change and anthropogenic factors, and their role in the sustainable development of agriculture. Special emphasis was placed on the rational use of water resources and the need to improve hydrological forecasting methods.
Conference participants emphasized the importance of intersectoral and international cooperation to ensure the sustainable development of the agro-industrial sector. Following the event, participants highlighted the need to further strengthen collaboration among research institutions, government bodies, and businesses, as well as to develop joint initiatives for more efficient use of natural resource and adaptation to modern challenges.
As part of the visit, a meeting between Ms. Rakhimova and representatives of the Federal Agency for Water Resources and the Water Problems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences took place on April 10. During the meeting, participants reviewed information on activities of the institutions and their current areas of work, including methods for calculating river flow, hydrological forecasting methods, and the use of satellite imagery in water assessments. They also discussed opportunities for developing cooperation, including through joint research and applied projects, prospects for joint workshops, training sessions, and conferences, and the ways to exchange experience and build capacities, including through internships and educational programs.
