SIC ICWC Participates in Workshop on Water-Efficient Allocation in a Central Asian Transboundary River Basin
On 7–9 September 2026, a hands-on training workshop, “Water Efficient Allocation in a Central Asian Transboundary River Basin: WEAP Model — Hands-on Training & Coaching,” was held at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) office in Tashkent.
The workshop was organized as part of a bilateral training program on the use of the WEAP model under the WE-ACT project, “Water Efficient Allocation in a Central Asian Transboundary River Basin.” The first phase of the training took place in Tashkent on 7–9 September, while the second phase is scheduled to be held in Bishkek on 10–11 September 2026.
The main objective of the training was to strengthen participants’ practical skills in using the WE-ACT WEAP model to analyze and efficiently allocate water resources in a transboundary river basin in Central Asia.
M. Rakhimova represented the SIC ICWC at the workshop and shared her experience in working with the WEAP model. Her contribution facilitated the exchange of practical knowledge and approaches to applying modeling tools in water resources management.
The hands-on training was led by Brecht D’Haeyer, MSc, a hydrologist and water allocation expert at FutureWater, an international research and consulting organization specializing in sustainable water management, hydrology, and climate change adaptation in the water sector.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to the WE-ACT project and the WEAP model developed for the Naryn, Karadarya, and Syr Darya River basins, extending to the Bakhri-Tojik reservoir. Particular attention was given to the objectives and functionality of the WEAP model, as well as its application in water resources analysis and the assessment of different water allocation scenarios.
At the conclusion of the workshop, certificates were presented to the participants. The event provided an important platform for strengthening professional cooperation among experts and further developing practical competencies in effective and sustainable water resources management.
