THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “COOPERATION ON FOOD SECURITY IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE”
Turkmenistan and FAO co-hosted the international conference “Cooperation on Food Security in the Context of Climate Change” in Ashgabat on March 9-10. The two days forum was organized by the Government of Turkmenistan and FAO with the support of the Representative office of the UN Resident Coordinator.
The purpose of the Ashgabat forum was to discuss issues of regional and global cooperation on food security. Forum also provided an opportunity for a multilateral exchange of experience, information, knowledge and technologies as well as development of coordinated approaches in addressing a wide range of issues in this area and capacity building of the agro-industrial complex.
On March 9, the 7th meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture of the Central Asian states was held as a part of the international conference. The meeting was designed to provide a platform for Ministers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, whose countries have been severely affected by drought, desertification, salinity and other issues, to exchange views and knowledge on application of the best practices in adaptation of agriculture to climate change.
The meeting in hybrid format was attended by the FAO Subregional Coordinator for Central Asia, Viorel Gutu, FAO Deputy Director General, Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, Vladimir Rakhmanin, Heads of relevant ministries from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and representatives from Iran. In addition to the Central Asian countries, the representatives of international organizations and financial institutions, including the World Bank, the Eurasian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank and others participated in the meeting.
The relevance of continuing such meetings on a regular basis has been emphasized, which will further strength the mutually beneficial partnership that meets the common interests and will contribute to the development of action-oriented proposals, and promising joint projects for the effective use of the solid potential of the Central Asian countries.
