NETWORKING WORKSHOP ON WATER GOVERNANCE RESEARCH IN CENTRAL ASIA
The SDGnexus hosted a workshop on water governance research in Central Asia on May 14-15 in Giessen, Germany.
The main objective of the workshop was to bring together scientists from Germany working on water governance in Central Asia or planning to do so in the near future as well as to identify current knowledge gaps and define a research program. Scientists, practitioners and representatives of Central Asian embassies were invited to encourage these efforts.
Research on water governance can be divided into the following groups: (i) water governance, social-economic and global concepts, and climate change (ii) water sector development, water use efficiency, impact of reforms on productivity and livelihoods, and (iii) agricultural reforms and their impact on the water sector.
The medium-term objectives are to enhance capacity and facilitate networking with a view to establishing a think tank/research center on water governance in Central Asia. This organization should be linked to existing academic structures.
The Workshop was organized in the form of the following sessions:
- Global discourse on water governance
- Recent water governance reforms in Central Asia
- Exploring the role of higher education institutions in regional water governance
- Interactions of research and policy stakeholders in regional water governance
- Next steps in water governance research
Director of SIC ICWC Dinara Ziganshina made a key report on “Interactions of Research and Policy Stakeholders in Regional Water Governance”.
Participants engaged in forward-thinking discussions about the future of water governance research, discussing the ways in which collaborations could be strengthened.
