JOINT ACTIVITIES DISCUSSED WITH JAPANESE RESEARCHERS
On June 4, SIC ICWC had a meeting with Japanese researchers as part of the Uzbek-Japan Joint International Research Development Program SATREPS.
Kenji Tanaka (Kyoto University), Takeo Onishi (Gifu University), and Temur Khujanazarov (Kyoto University) presented their research and expressed their interest in disseminating research results to inform decision makers.
Director of SIC ICWC proposed using the Expert Platform for Water Security, Sustainable Development and Future Studies, as a space for dissemination of knowledge and posting the research results in a weekly newsletter of SIC ICWC. These research results could be used to inform reformation processes in water and agricultural sectors in the Central Asian countries.
Prof Tanaka also made a proposal to test the flow forecast model in the Aral Sea basin. The model will be completed in the coming months. This could be a useful tool to improve forecasting of flow by the ICWC.
The work on the MODFLOW groundwater flow model for the Kashkadarya region is ongoing. It seems that the experiment results will be useful for water balance calculations as part of the new tasks to be solved by the Ministry of Water Management of Uzbekistan.
The parties also discussed the possibility to exchange the results of RS-data interpretation for water and water consumption assessments, as well as the methodology used at SIC for assessing crop water requirements.
