SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE "UZBEKISTAN-KYRGYZSTAN: SYNERGY OF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP"

On July 9, the Scientific and Practical Conference “Uzbekistan – Kyrgyzstan: Synergy of Strategic Partnership” was held in the International Institute of Central Asia.

The event was organized by the International Institute of Central Asia and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives under the President of Kyrgyzstan.

The aim of the conference was to develop and consolidate common approaches of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to further development of cooperation at the bilateral, regional and international levels and to analyze specific areas of cooperation.

The conference addressed the issues related to the substantive and practical content of the historic Declaration on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan signed during the last meeting of the two heads of state.

Director of SIC ICWC Dinara Ziganshina made a presentation entitled “Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan: water cooperation”.

The Declaration on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan says that the countries support the integrated use of water and energy resources and stresses the importance of developing sustainable mechanisms for mutually beneficial cooperation, taking into account common interests and needs.

Agreements on the joint use of the Orto-Tokoi (Kasansai) and Andijan (Kempirabad) reservoirs, the start of construction of the Kambarata-1 and the work of the Joint Water Commission can serve as vivid examples of cooperation.

To strengthen regional cooperation on climate change and water, it is proposed to implement comprehensive measures to protect catchment areas, maintain and increase forests, develop a network of monitoring over quality and quantity of river water, glaciers and other hydrometeorological parameters, and improve the efficiency of transboundary river flow regulation.
