MEETING WITH TURKMENISTAN DELEGATION

SIC ICWC welcomed sector-specific experts from Turkmenistan at its office on 23 June 2025.

The meeting was organized as part of the project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits" implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment Protection of Turkmenistan, with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).



The delegation included representatives of governmental agencies, such as the International Technological Park at the Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Environment Protection, State Committee for Water Management, Ministry of Agriculture, Dashoguz and Lebap local administrations, as well as UNDP/GEF project representatives.

Director of SIC ICWC, Dr. Dinara Ziganshina in her welcome speech highlighted the great importance of transboundary water cooperation. She also shortly explained the current activities of the Center and future plans on the improvement of water use practices in Central Asia.



UNDP/GEF project manager Ms. Gozel Atamuradova presented the project goals and the expectations from the study tour.

Given the shared interest, chief expert of SIC's research and analytical division for regional water management Dr. Galina Stulina presented the IKI Nexus project results on irrigation regimes and hydromodule zoning. The issue of how relevant different hydromodule zoning models are, particularly in the context of water-saving technologies, generated significant interest.

Deputy Director of SIC ICWC, Mr. Alisher Nazariy made a presentation on water resources in the Amu Darya basin. Impacts of climate change on water availability in the river basin, water quality assessments and potential risks posed by the construction of the Qosh Tepa Canal in Afghanistan provoked lively discussions.
