Workshop “Introduction to the LEAP model for Central Asia and Integration of LEAP - WEAP tools” as part of the project “Water-Energy Nexus Systems Modeling”.

On 6 November 2025, a one-day workshop “Introduction to the LEAP Model for Central Asia and Integration of LEAP–WEAP Tools” was held at the SIC ICWC Training Center. This event was organized jointly with the World Bank Group and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) as part of the “Water-Energy Nexus Systems Modeling” Project.

This workshop marked the continuation of the project’s second phase, focusing on the energy component. The main objective was to introduce participants to the LEAP model for Central Asia and to demonstrate the integration of LEAP and WEAP tools for analyzing interlinkages between water and energy systems.

During the workshop, participants were presented the SEI’s model for Central Asia, which covers all five countries of the region and represents the full spectrum of energy generation and consumption—from national energy demand to cross-border electricity flows. The model spans the period 2010–2050, includes hourly simulations of electricity processes, and analyzes greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O).

  • A special focus was given to demonstrating the interaction between the LEAP and WEAP models:
  • WEAP assesses the availability of water resources for hydropower and sets priorities for their use.
  • The output data are transmitted to LEAP, which calculates electricity generation and balances supply and demand.

The output from LEAP is integrated in the WEAP for more precise definition of scenarios.

Such an approach supports the development of sustainable energy scenarios that account for limited water resources—an essential consideration for Central Asia.
