Workshop on Efficient Water Allocation in Transboundary River Basins in Central Asia
From November 13 to 15, 2025, Osh hosted a workshop on “Effective Water Allocation in a Central Asian Transboundary River Basin: Developing a Reliable Decision Support System for Water Allocation in a Changing Climate.”
The event was organized as part of the WE-ACT project, which seeks to enhance regional water management, promote innovative digital tools, and strengthen cross-border cooperation among the Central Asian countries.
The workshop brought together experts from water management organizations, research institutions, international agencies, and other stakeholders to discuss up-to-date approaches to water management and explore solutions that enhance the region’s resilience to climate change.
Key workshop sessions included:
- Demonstration and feedback on the Decision Support System (DSS) (HAEDES)
- Automatic data collection (POR)
- Hydrological forecasting / SWAT+ (TUM)
- Water Allocation Model / WEAP (FW-NL)
- Value of water
Key Outcomes
The participants explored strategies to improve water efficiency in Central Asia and highlighted the importance of joint data management and sharing among countries in the region. The digital tools and models presented showcased significant potential for improving transparency and resilience of water management decisions in transboundary basins.
The workshop provided a crucial platform for strengthening cooperation and outlined next steps for adoption of up-to-date decision support systems in the water sector of Central Asia.
