Meeting with the University of Manchester within the framework of the Project “CAREC’s Water Pillar: Water–Energy Modelling”

On 5 December 2025, a meeting with representatives of the University of Manchester was held at the Training Center of SIC ICWC as part of the project “CAREC’s Water Pillar – Water and Energy Modelling” implemented with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The purpose of the event was to present the Central Asia Water–Energy Balance Model currently developed with ADB funding. The meeting brought together experts from SIC ICWC, CDC Energy, IWMI, and BWO Syr Darya.

Representatives of the University of Manchester also provided an overview of several research efforts and models developed in cooperation with partners over the past two years. These included an updated model of the Amu Darya Basin, tools for optimizing the operation rules of the Vakhsh Reservoir Cascade using artificial intelligence, and a draft model of the Syr Darya river system.

In the afternoon, a practical training session was organized. The experts of the University of Manchester presented the PyWR model and its applications for analysis of water and energy systems.

Experts of CDC Energy and SIC ICWC proposed several scenarios for flow regulation by major reservoirs and hydropower plants – Rogun, Kambarata-1, Toktogul, and Nurek – which can be modeled and analyzed using the PyWR model.
