SIC ICWC took part in the National Dialogue on Water Policy in Turkmenistan
On 23 June 2026, a meeting of the National Dialogue on Water Policy in Turkmenistan was organized with the support of UNECE and development partners in Ashgabat. The meeting brought together representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, research institutions, international organizations, private sector, expert community, as well as financing institutions.
The meeting goal was to develop a coordinated intersectoral vision for further introduction of integrated water resources management in Turkmenistan in the context of climate challenges, growing water demand and the need to improve the regulatory framework.
The meeting’s program included three thematic sessions:
- «Priorities for the development of the water sector in Turkmenistan: climate resilience and improvement of the legal framework». . Participants discussed the strategic priorities for the sector under changing climate conditions, as well as the need to improve secondary legislation and develop new regulatory acts.
- «Opportunities for cooperation in a framework of “Regional mechanisms for the low carbon, climate-resilient transformation of the energy-water-land Nexus in Central Asia”. This session focused on regional cooperation under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) project implemented by a consortium comprising the OECD, UNECE, SIC ICWC, EBRD, and FAO.
- «International and regional best practices in the “Energy-Water-Land” NEXUS domains». The session provided a platform for sharing successful experiences from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Central and West Asia, as well as initiatives of international organizations aimed at strengthening water security.
On behalf of the Scientific Information Center of ICWC, A. Galustyan delivered a presentation on "Tools for Intersectoral Management of Water, Energy and Ecosystems in Central Asia." The presentation showcased practical solutions being developed by the Center in collaboration with regional experts based on the WEFE Nexus (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems) approach. The presentation highlighted the outcomes of the Center's work with experts from Central Asian countries under several regional initiatives:
- "Low-Carbon and Climate-Resilient Transformation of the Energy-Water-Land Nexus in Central Asia" (IKI): development of regional cooperation mechanisms and analytical decision-support tools to promote climate-resilient development.
- “Studies on priority issues in the field of water, energy and environment in the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins”: results of three target studies. For the Amu Darya Basin, an assessment of the current state of ecosystems, accompanied by a package of conservation measures and recommendations for improving economic mechanisms for water use; and for the Syr Darya Basin, the development of solutions to enhance the climate resilience of water infrastructure.
